In this post, we’ll discuss what you need to know before and after a skin tightening treatment to maximize your results.

How Does Skin Tightening Work?

While there are different forms of technology that skin tightening uses, they often follow a similar underlying science — neocollagenesis. For example, there’s an entire complex science behind radiofrequency, but here’s a simplified summary:

  1. When you put the device on your skin, it sends out controlled heat energy into the deeper skin layers where there’s abundant collagen.
  2. This makes the collagen that’s already in your skin tighten up right away, making your skin instantly firmer.
  3. Then, your body’s natural healing system kicks in, and it starts making new collagen and elastin.

This combination of instant firming and gradual collagen regeneration ensures that your results are effective and lasting.

What to Expect Before, During and After a Skin Tightening Treatment

Before treatment, here are some things to consider:

  • Hydration

To optimize the effectiveness of radiofrequency treatment, it’s important to have well-hydrated skin. Dehydrated skin can be tough to heat effectively, whereas well-hydrated skin acts as a conduit, facilitating better heat distribution. To ensure your skin is adequately hydrated, be sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment.

  • Sun protection

When the skin is tanned or sunburned, it’s more sensitive. Use sunscreen, especially when outdoors, or better still, minimize sun exposure for a short period.

  • Appropriate skincare routine

Certain active ingredients can make the skin more sensitive. This will be discussed during your consultation with your provider.

  • Full consultation

Speaking of consultation, have a detailed discussion with your provider to address specific skin concerns, needs and goals.

During the treatment, here’s what to expect:

  1. To start off, your treatment specialist will start by applying a transparent or ultrasound gel to your targeted treatment area. This gel serves as a conduit for the radiofrequency (RF) energy, ensuring a uniform energy distribution.
  2. Next, the RF device will be employed in the treatment area. There are different types of RF devices available, including handheld wands and larger machines.
  3. Your treatment specialist will systematically move the device across your skin’s surface, following a specific pattern. This technique allows for the precise delivery of controlled RF energy to the deeper layers of your skin.
  4. Throughout the procedure, your treatment specialist will closely monitor your skin’s temperature to ensure it remains within the optimal therapeutic range, to prevent any discomfort or damage. As necessary, adjustments will be made to the intensity and duration of the RF energy.
  5. Afterwards, a soothing gel or cream will be applied to the treated area.

Following treatment, you may experience some temporary redness and mild swelling immediately after, but these side effects typically resolve within a few hours to a few days.

Results are not immediate and become more noticeable over time as collagen production increases. Most people need a series of treatments, typically spaced a few weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.
